Keep one day inside Cagliari. Start with the market, climb into the historic centre and let one proper lunch anchor the route. Nora, Chia and Cabras can have their own day.
Before you start
Use a market opening day and confirm the current location and hours. At our 4 October 2026 check, San Benedetto traders were operating from the temporary market in Piazza Nazzari while the original building was being renovated.
The times below are suggested planning windows. They are not published opening hours for markets, monuments or restaurants.
Check the official San Benedetto market update08:30–10:00 / Coffee and the market
Have a coffee and a small pastry, then visit the temporary market. Look at fish, vegetables, cheeses and bread before deciding what you want for lunch. Ask a stallholder which produce is local and which is in season.
This is a working food market. Keep aisles clear, ask before photographing a person and choose purchases you can carry or store properly.
10:00–12:30 / Villanova and Castello
Walk toward Villanova, then continue uphill into Castello. The climb is part of the day, so take it slowly. Piazza Palazzo and the cathedral area give the route a clear centre; viewpoints give you a pause.
Choose one interior visit if it interests you and is open. You do not need to enter every monument to have a good walk. Check access and tickets directly before committing the morning.
12:30–14:00 / Lunch in Marina
Descend toward Marina and choose one main course: malloreddus, fregula with clams or a menu that introduces a different side of the island. Reserve the table you care about, particularly on a busy date.
Read the menu as it is today. A current seasonal dish is more useful than insisting on a speciality the kitchen is not serving.
14:00–16:30 / Pause, then a short walk
Let lunch settle. Choose a café, return to your accommodation or take a short stroll through Marina and the streets around Piazza Yenne. In hot weather, move the longer walks to the cooler part of the day.
If you want a museum, let it replace this part of the route. Adding another substantial stop works best when you also remove one.
16:30–18:30 / A viewpoint or Stampace
Return toward the Saint Remy viewpoint if access is open, or walk around Stampace. Keep the afternoon flexible: the morning already gives you a market and the high historic centre.
A bakery stop is a useful alternative to a second sit-down meal. Ask what has just been made and buy a modest portion.
Evening / One Cagliari table
Choose the side of Sardinian cooking you have not yet met. After a seafood lunch, a pastoral or vegetable-led dinner can bring a different conversation. If lunch was generous, dinner can be simple.
Finish with a hot seada if it appeals to you. There is no need to turn the day into a competition between restaurants.
Route to save
Check the route on your date. Hills, stairs, access changes and personal mobility needs can change the best way between stops.
