A region page is a starting point. For a usable trip, choose one part of the island and give it enough time. These areas show how the food conversation changes with the landscape.
Cagliari and the Campidano
Begin here for city markets, semolina pasta, southern Sardinian cooking and access to both sea and inland ingredients. The capital makes a practical first base for the free Cagliari walking day.
Good first choice: a city stay with a market morning and one or two clearly planned excursions.
Nora, Pula and the southern coast
This is a separate day south of Cagliari. Give Nora archaeology real time, then let Pula or a lagoon-focused meal anchor lunch. A coast pause can follow if the season, transport and your energy fit.
Choose a southern lunch and confirm its service before building the day around it. Check the archaeological site directly for current access.
Oristano, Cabras and the Sinis
Wetlands, mullet bottarga and the Cabras table give the west a distinct identity. Oristano offers a city pause; Cabras is a useful food anchor; the Sinis connects the meal with coast and archaeology.
A longer stay gives this area more room than a rushed return trip. If you do visit from Cagliari, plan the whole outward and return journey first.
Alghero and Bosa
Treat the north-west as its own chapter. A town-and-coast journey here needs a different base or dedicated travel time. Local menus and wine names offer another way to read the territory.
Do not add Alghero as a casual afternoon extra to a Cagliari city day. Choose the north-west because you want to spend time there.
Nuoro, Orgosolo and Barbagia
The interior brings bread, sheep’s cheese and pastoral cooking into clearer focus. Cultural visits and a meal work best when planned together. Arrange a traditional dining experience before setting off if it needs advance booking.
Give inland Sardinia a full day or an overnight. Its food deserves more than a stop between beaches.
Ogliastra and filled pasta traditions
Culurgiones introduce the east through a hand-made pasta tradition. The filling and closure are a reason to ask about local practice, rather than treating every version across the island as identical.
Let this territory become a future stay if your present trip is centred on Cagliari. You can enjoy the dish without pretending you have explored its whole geography.
Make the map serve the trip
Choose your base, one principal meal and one cultural or landscape anchor per day. Then check transport. If the journey leaves no time to enjoy the table, simplify the route.
