Most planning mistakes begin with trying to fit too much into one day. These checks help you choose meals and routes that belong together.
1. Treating the whole island as one day trip
Cagliari, Cabras, Alghero and Nuoro need their own travel time. Start with a base and check a real route before booking a distant lunch. A map full of saved places is not yet an itinerary.
2. Expecting every table to revolve around fish
Seafood matters, but so do grain, bread, cheeses, roast meats and vegetables. Let inland and pastoral cooking have a place in the trip. The menu in front of you is a better guide than the fact that Sardinia is an island.
3. Following an old market address without checking
San Benedetto is operating from a temporary location in Piazza Nazzari at our October 2026 check. Use the official update before visiting. A familiar market name does not guarantee that the old building is open.
4. Assuming porceddu is always ready to order
Confirm that the kitchen is preparing it on your date and whether it needs advance booking. Do this before travelling for the dish. A roast dinner is easier to enjoy when it is already part of the plan.
5. Confusing malloreddus with potato gnocchi
Gnocchetti sardi are semolina pasta. Knowing the shape helps you understand the sauce and choose the right ingredient when cooking at home. Ask about the preparation rather than relying only on an English menu translation.
6. Ignoring the temperature of the day
Plan longer walks and open archaeological visits for the cooler part of a hot day. Leave a proper lunch pause. A short route you enjoy is more useful than a long one you abandon halfway.
7. Ordering every famous dish at once
Choose one main food focus. Share a starter or dessert if that suits the table, and leave another speciality for tomorrow. Appetite and time deserve a place beside curiosity.
8. Expecting one universal version
Bread shapes, filled pasta, sweets and family preparations vary. Ask what makes the local version different. You can learn more from that answer than from declaring a dish wrong because it differs from a saved photograph.
