Breakfast in Florence: Coffee, Pastries and a Tuscan Start

Breakfast in Florence can be a short pause at a bar or a slower start at a table. Coffee and a pastry are a familiar pairing, but people’s routines differ. Choose the breakfast that suits your day instead of treating a habit as a rule.

Start at the bar

In Italy, a bar is often a café as well as a place for drinks. Look at the pastry display and choose what appeals to you. You may see a cornetto or brioche with different fillings, alongside other baked goods. The names and selection can vary from one business to another.

“Un cappuccino e un cornetto, per favore” is a useful starting sentence. If you want a particular filling, point to the item or ask what is inside before ordering.

Standing or sitting

Counter service and table service can have different prices. Read the displayed menu or ask whether the price changes before you sit down. Some cafés ask you to pay first, while others take payment afterwards; watch the local sequence or ask at the till.

A Tuscan morning does not have to be sweet

If you prefer savoury food, a bakery’s olive-oil schiacciata may be an easy choice. Check what is available and how large the piece is. A filled version can be substantial, especially if you already have a lunch reservation.

Make the first stop useful

Choose a café near your accommodation or the neighbourhood where the morning begins. For San Lorenzo or Sant’Ambrogio, start locally and then walk to the market. A cross-city journey for coffee rarely adds much to a first visit.

If a museum booking is early, keep breakfast simple and leave time to reach the entrance. On a slower day, sitting down can be the point of the morning.

Ask about ingredients

Milk, eggs and nuts appear in many pastries and drinks. Tell staff what you need rather than guessing from the shape or name of a product. “Cosa c’è dentro?” means “What is inside?” For an allergy, specify the ingredient and ask them to check.

Leave room for the day

A comfortable breakfast gives the rest of the itinerary a good beginning. You can have another coffee later without turning every pause into a meal. Let the morning unfold around the city you came to see.
