Start at the table

Milan rewards a little curiosity beyond its busiest squares. Look for a seasonal menu, ask what is prepared in house and choose one dish you want to understand. There is room for a classic lunch, a neighbourhood café and an evening drink without turning the day into a checklist.

Three recipes to bring home

Your first visit, made simpler

  • Choose a compact route. Duomo and Brera make a useful central start; save the Navigli for a separate part of the day.
  • Leave space for lunch. Risotto deserves a seated meal and a little patience.
  • Ask about the aperitivo. Check what food is included with a drink before ordering.
  • Keep one alternative. A market visit can replace a sightseeing stop; it does not need to become an extra detour.

Milan is only the beginning

Give Lake Como, Valtellina, Bergamo, Brescia, Mantua or the Pavia countryside a separate day. Each offers a different reason to sit down and eat.
