Start with a working market

In Palermo, choose the Capo or Ballarò for a focused look at food shopping and street counters. Vucciria is another historic area with its own changing character. Visit with curiosity, not a checklist of supposedly guaranteed stalls.

Ask useful questions

What is local today? Is this made here? How should it be stored? Can you buy a small portion? Clear questions make a better purchase than relying on a handwritten ‘typical’ label.

A producer visit is a separate appointment

Dairies, farms, wineries and small workshops may receive visitors only by arrangement. Confirm the address, language, duration, cost and transport before setting out. Do not promise access based on a map pin.

Explore another food landscape

A western base opens different routes from an eastern one. Trapani and Marsala, Etna’s towns, and the southeast should be planned as independent chapters. Keep tastings compatible with a safe return journey.

Take food home carefully

Read storage instructions and border restrictions. Keep chilled items chilled; do not leave ricotta pastry in the sun. Retain labels and buy modest amounts that can travel safely.

Keep exploring
