Lombardy Food Areas: Choose Your Next Chapter

Use Milan as your first chapter, then choose another area with a different appetite in mind. The suggestions below are separate outings; they are not a one-day route around the whole region.

Milan · City lunch and aperitivo

Go for: saffron risotto, a traditional lunch and neighbourhood cafés. Give it: one unhurried city day. Begin with our free Milan itinerary, then use a second visit to try a market or a different neighbourhood.

Lake Como · Water and a slower table

Go for: a lakeside walk and a menu that makes room for freshwater fish. Choose: one town or a small, practical stretch of shore. Check boats and connections before building a route that depends on them; lunch should not become a race for the last departure.

Valtellina · Buckwheat and mountain comfort

Go for: pizzoccheri and the dairy-rich mountain table. Begin with: Teglio if the dish is the focus of your visit. Leave enough time for the journey from Milan and for a seated meal; this deserves its own outing.

Bergamo and Brescia · Filled pasta, two traditions

Go for: casoncelli and local versions of a northern Italian pasta tradition. Choose: one city for a first day rather than rushing through both. In Bergamo, polenta offers another way into the local table; in Brescia, read the menu's filling and seasoning before deciding.

Mantua · Pumpkin and a crumbly finish

Go for: tortelli di zucca and sbrisolona. Plan: a lunch with room for a small sweet finish and a walk through the city. Mantua has its own culinary identity; it does not need to be an extra stop on a crowded Milan day.

Pavia, Lomellina and the Oltrepò · Rice country

Go for: a connection between the landscape and the rice on the plate. Choose: a compact countryside or town outing with a confirmed lunch stop. Rural distances and transport are part of the plan, so check the exact route before setting off.

Pick your pace

For a first trip, combine Milan with just one of these areas. Choose according to what you want to eat, the travel time you can spare and the season you will visit.
