Trying to eat the whole island in Palermo
Use Palermo as the first chapter. A Catania speciality on a Palermo menu does not make the eastern coast a nearby day stop. Choose fewer bases and give each place its own meals.
Ordering a tasting marathon
Fried rice, bread, pasta and pastry quickly become a large meal. Share where welcome, start small and leave room for your main lunch. Ask about portion sizes before committing.
Treating every market as identical
Capo, Ballarò and Vucciria have different surroundings and rhythms. A lively evening area is not proof of a full produce market the next morning. Check what is operating on your travel day.
Guessing ingredients
Anchovies can appear in apparently vegetable-based dishes; offal is part of some street-food traditions. Ricotta, nuts, celery and gluten are common. Explain your needs directly and ask about shared equipment and oil.
Buying labels rather than checking provenance
Ask what the product is, where it was made and how to store it. A pistachio flavour is not evidence of protected Bronte origin. Follow the entry rules of your destination when taking food home.
Leaving transport until the end
Confirm the return journey before a producer visit, island excursion or rural meal. Keep wine tasting separate from driving. Allow weather and service changes to alter the plan.
