What to Eat in Trentino

Bread dumplings, potato fritters, polenta and apple pastry. Choose a few flavours to understand rather than trying to taste everything at once.

Recognise these names

  • Strangolapreti: soft bread-and-spinach dumplings, commonly finished with butter, sage and grated cheese.
  • Canederli: bread dumplings with several fillings; served in broth or with butter. Check the filling and the broth.
  • Tortel de patate: crisp potato fritters, often served with cheeses, cured meats or beans. They are not filled pasta.
  • Polenta: a base for cheese, mushrooms or meat. Ask about the accompaniment rather than ordering by the name alone.
  • Carne salada: seasoned cured beef associated with Alto Garda; served thinly sliced or cooked, depending on the preparation.
  • Apple strudel: apples wrapped in pastry, often with raisins and nuts. Leave room for a slice.

Let the valley guide your plate

Near Garda, look for the local olive oil and carne salada. Apple country invites a fruit tasting and a bakery stop; mountain dairies bring cheeses and butter to the table. Freshwater trout and char are part of the region’s food landscape too.

Order one dish well

You do not need to order every course. Ask for the day’s preparation, choose a portion that suits your appetite and check ingredients before ordering. A traditional name does not promise that the dish is vegetarian or made on site.

A small shopping list

  • Apples or a local apple product.
  • A piece of cheese with its producer named.
  • Honey or a small bottle of Garda Trentino olive oil.
  • A bakery treat to enjoy that day.
