A little planning leaves more room for a good meal. Use these checks before you book a table or add another town to the day.
Do not stack every famous food into one lunch
Pick a main meal, then keep snacks optional. Fried foods, pizza and rich pasta dishes can each be substantial. Save another taste for tomorrow rather than ordering from a checklist.
Ask what the dish contains
Frittatine can include meat and dairy; pastry can include ricotta, eggs and semolina; babà may contain alcohol. Vegetable dishes can include anchovies or be cooked with meat. Explain dietary requirements directly before ordering.
Read the bill before you order
Check whether fish or a special is priced by weight, whether the cover or service charge is separate, and whether table service changes a café price. Ask about anything unclear. Menus and prices vary by business.
Leave room around reservations
A famous address may involve a queue, a booking system or a closed service. Have a second choice nearby. Confirm the day, time, number of guests and any cancellation terms with the business.
Do not treat all of Campania as a day trip
Naples, Capri, Pompeii, Amalfi and Cilento cannot all fit comfortably into one food day. Choose one direction, check the operator’s current notices and identify the return journey before you start.
Separate a producer visit from a shopping stop
Book tastings and dairy visits directly. Check how fresh purchases should travel, and buy quantities that fit the rest of your day. A protected label describes a product and its rules; it does not guarantee tours or access.
Start with a smaller route
